Many people continue to think avoiding meat as infrequently as once a week will make a significant difference to the climate. But according to one recent study, even if Americans eliminated all animal protein from their diets, they would reduce US greenhouse gas emissions by only 2.6%.

According to our research at the University of California, Davis, if the practice of Meatless Monday were to be adopted by all Americans, we’d see a reduction of only 0.5%.

An astonishingly useful thread on progressive vs. conservative thought by Jennifer Dziura (text version via ThreadReader):

Wow, that is legitimately horrifying.

I intended to help someone, but it turns out the thing I did kills people. The only moral option is … Doubling down and killing more people.

thornshrike

It all boils down to the different moral foundations people use. For progressives, care, equality and “freedom to” are the main building blocks for deciding whether something is just and moral.

- Does it harm people?
- Does it result in inequality?
- Does it prevent people from engaging in society?

As long as the proposed idea (behaviour, policy) clears those two hurdles, it’s good to go for progressives. This type of thinking is super compatible with consequentialism.

For conservatives, there are more foundations to consider - authority, loyalty, fairness, purity and “liberty from”

- Does it violate established social hierarchy? (in this approach, hierarchy is good and beneficial).
- Does it damage in-group bonds? (again, strong in-group loyalties are considered to be good).
- Does it fail to reward contributors and punish wrong-doers? (this is a big one - fairness is about just desserts and consequences for actions, not equality).
- Does it breach the sanctity of the body? (this is a complex one, rooted in cultural notions of disgust and body as a temple).
- Does it force people to engage in actions they disagree with? (this is the freedom from taxation, PC, and so on).

Libertarians pretty much care only about Liberty from things, usually the government.

This complex set of values means that the same idea or policy will get different moral evaluations. Let’s take a few examples:

Legalising weed: all fine in terms of the progressive foundations. But it breaches purity (the body is a temple) and to an extent interacts with conservative version of fairness by removing a punishment on what they consider to be morally wrong behaviour.

Universal healthcare: again, all clear in progressive values. This policy will help. But in the conservative value set, the policy fails at fairness by ‘rewarding’ non-contributing behaviour (poverty and illness). Let’s not get into a debate over how this is even classified as behaviour rather than a condition. It also breaches freedom from for people who are mostly focused on being free from government, rather than private insurers. The interesting caveat is that purity should favour healthcare - if the body is sacred, we should as a society value accessible ways to keep it healthy and clean. However, because many health conditions have contributing behavioural factors, it can be considered unjust to help people out of the consequences of their actions - even at a net loss to society.

If anyone is interested, Jonathan Haidt writes a lot about the moral foundations, and while he’s often annoyingly centrist in how he presents the ideas, the research is pretty solid.

Facing that my mom will likely be homeless

interruptingkau

Back in July I made this post, the gist being that my dad threw my disabled, elderly mother out of the house and she was barely getting by with my sister and sister’s boyfriend, who were both addicts who stole from her and didn’t have any income of their own.

Things got better, things got worse. The current situation is that they have to meet with the manager to discuss payment arrangements to get caught up on rent OR be out on the 31st of December. The manager has been dodging them, and I imagine he’d rather just have them out than try to arrange anything. Either way, mom has no money.

My sister is, apparently, off of drugs and trying to get her life back on track, but she has a number of fees and fines against her both for legal violations and child support. Well, mom’s the only one with an income, so mom’s been paying them. She has nothing left. They were counting on money coming in from whatever it is my sister receives from child support owed to her, but it’s been delayed and held up and frankly I don’t believe it will ever come.

My sister’s boyfriend is still useless, and I found out recently that he hits and pushes her. My sister has rheumatoid arthritis so she is a very fragile person, and a fall could easily harm her severely. She doesn’t want to leave him.

My mom’s truck was fixed for a while, and then it broke in a way that would be far more to fix than to just get a new vehicle, so she doesn’t even have something she could sleep in if she’s outside. She’s been walking everywhere in northeast Ohio winter.

There are also three cats in the picture, at least one of which I dearly hope I can convince them to take to a shelter since he’s still a kitten.

Right now I’m not hopeful I can keep her in her apartment. My dad has made it clear he will never let her come home. She will, short of a legitimate miracle, be homeless by the end of the year. All I can do is try to gather some funds to give her some kind of cushion and keep her safe.

So I was doing some research on common medications for a pharmacology class at school, and realized that Wikipedia is calling out the outrageous practices of pharmacological sales in the US. Right up there in the main intro to the medication they’re showing how much the drug costs to produce, versus how much a typical course of treatment costs in the USA.

Amoxicillin, a front line antibiotic, typically taken at one pill per day. 10 pills cost between 0.20 and 0.50 USD to produce, marked up at up to 80 times the price in the US.

Salbutamol, AKA an asthma puffer, on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines (considered to be the most important basic medications needed to be stocked by a pharmacy/hospital), a life saving medication.

How about oxygen? A tank of oxygen, used as a basic treatment for everything from low blood oxygen to respiratory failure to maintaining oxygen while administering anesthesia for an operation?

kamikazesoundsociety

image

Epinephrine/adrenaline, AKA an epipen, given to people having a type of severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis, where their airways swell and close up. A person in anaphylaxis will die without epinephrine/adrenaline. Costs at most $0.95 to produce, and they’re sold for $70 at the absolute cheapest for a single vial.

kamikazesoundsociety

image

Naloxone/Narcan, used to stop an opioid overdose. $5.30, at most, to produce. $4500 to buy.

Bisoprolol/Zebeta, given for high blood pressure, angina (chest pain), and heart failure, sold at over 1000% it costs to produce.

The combined birth control pill, ethinylestradiol/levonorgestrel.

Also, just so you’re aware, as of late Mat 2018, 1.80 GBP is 2.40 USD. For a three month supply of the pill. The same amount could cost you 150 USD in the United States.

The MMR vaccine, given to prevent mumps, measles, and rubella - diseases that could leave you deaf, blind, infertile.

Deregulation will get you killed. Republican policies make your life worse.

iesika

To be even clearer for those who aren’t going to click the article - the reason that e. coli infested lettuce is such an issue is that if the lettuce is watered with or otherwise exposed to contaminated water, the vascular system of the plant sucks it up, so that it’s inside the part of the plant you are going to be eating raw.

Washing and even sterilizing the outside of it won’t help, and you don’t cook lettuce. The only way to make sure there’s no e. coli in your lettuce is to make sure no e. coli gets in your lettuce.

Which requires testing and regulating the water used in production.

fullhalalalchemist

I also want to make clear that companies in charge of this 100% had the option of keeping clean water instead of cutting costs. Just cuz the rule isnt there doesnt mean they dont have to follow it. They MADE this choice.
